9.6.16 CMVE Briefing – Reserve Rooms for CMVE Conference Before 9/15!

Reserve Rooms for CMVE Conference Before 9/15

If you plan to stay overnight during the 4th annual CMVE Conference, please call the Radisson on Grand (1-800-333-3333) to book your room indicating MCCA-CMVE for a reduced rate of $112.95/night. The discount rate block will be released 9/15 so make your reservations soon! (Also, an FYI – when I booked online, I didn’t get the opportunity to input the conference code; had to call and request it!) You can register for the CMVE Conference, too, while you’re at it if you haven’t already. Looking forward to seeing many of you there!

CMVE & MVAA Partner to Offer Fall Webinars Geared Toward Faculty and Academic Staff

We hope to see participants at all CMVE member institutions during the upcoming webinars (on 9/23, 10/19, and 11/10) presented by the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency (MVAA) on “Understanding the Needs of Student Veterans in the Classroom and Academic Environments.” See the attached handout for more details and find registration information online. We ask you to circulate this far and wide to encourage any and all veteran advocates on your campuses to participate in these events and maximize their ability to serve Michigan’s heroes in their classrooms. You might also consider wrap-around programming to invite a group of professionals from your campus to view this together and then engage in discussion on best supporting veterans at your institution or conducting business for a standing veteran success committee you may already have meeting on your campus.

Start Using Kognito’s Veterans on Campus Module Now with CMVE’s Unlimited Access
CMVE campuses are encouraged to begin making use of the free access to Kognito’s Veterans on Campus online training modules available through CMVE’s purchase of a 2-year agreement allowing unlimited access to all CMVE member institutions. Visit the CMVE website for more details on how to access the training modules, including a webcast of the live demo from the August 2016 launch of the agreement.

CMVE Subcommittees Re-Envisioned as “Knowledge Communities”

The CMVE Steering Committee voted unanimously last month to re-envision the current subcommittees to become more focused knowledge communities. This means that instead of periodic working meetings to engage with members, each knowledge community chair will plan for information-sharing, professional development, and special task force opportunities related to their knowledge area. We are very pleased that the upcoming annual conference will include time for roundtable discussions on each knowledge community topical areas and hope you’ll plan to join one of the knowledge communities to contribute to ideas for focus areas and hear about upcoming events your chairs are planning! CMVE’s Knowledge Communities are:

  • Academic Credit – Chris Goeth, OU, Chair; Andrew Cosgrove, LCC, Co-Chair
  • Outreach & Recruitment – Sarah Mellon, MSU, Chair
  • Professional Development – Dr. Julie Lavender  – Kirtland CC (please note that there will not be a roundtable on this topic at the conference; we will have one focused on School Certifying Officials (SCOs) instead)
  • Post-Military Career Success – Steven Lipnicki, GVSU
  • SVA/Student Support – Dr. Will Emerson, UM-Dearborn
