Academic Credit Knowledge Community Virtual Meeting – 1/10/18 @9AM

Dr. Julie Lavender, Kirtland Community College/CMVE’s Chair for Academic Credit, is convening a virtual meeting for all interested parties to join a conversation of the CMVE academic credit knowledge community that will: review archived materials and on-demand resources from the MI-litary Equivalency Project; offer perspectives from Transfer Steering Committee Liaisons, Dr. Deedee Stakley, Ferris State University, and Dennis Bertch, Kalamazoo Valley Community College; and open dialogue about lingering issues and potential opportunities  to increase military credit awards in Michigan. 2018 Conference Will Take Place at Western Michigan University September 20-21

The CMVE Steering Committee is excited to head to Kalamazoo and grateful to WMU for hosting the CMVE’s 6th annual conference scheduled for September 20-21, 2018 with the theme of Beyond the Veterans Lounge. Please save the date and begin thinking about potential discussion session topics you could present on along the theme so you’re ready when the call for proposals is released next year!

Thanks for everyone’s work in updating the information on CMVE’s most recent marketing publication. You can access the new publication digitally here. It looks great in-person, too! These cardstock flyers and CMVE-branded pens are available to your institution for stock in any pertinent student services offices, veterans lounge, or your dissemination during any military recruitment events you might attend. Please contact Katie Giardello with the quantity desired and address for delivery and I will mail the materials to your campuses as-needed.

MHEC’S Multi-State Collaborative on Military Credit (MCMC) will offer a webinar on Thursday, January 25, 2018, at 2:00 p.m. ET, in collaboration with the Association of Institutional Research next month. The webinar: Institutional Research for Military Connected Student Success will highlight the increased interest in higher education to measure the success of veterans and other military connected students. Institutional research professionals are encouraged to attend. Register today!

 

Forever GI Bill Effective Dates & Implications for SCOs

Don’t forget, the FGIB webinar MHECC held back on September 21st  can be accessed at http://www.mhec.org/mcmc-webinars. Please also see the email from Kara Fields that summarizes changes coming in 2018, notably: Reporting fees increased to $16 per GI Bill user, effective 8/1/2018; Schools with 100+ GI Bill users will be required to: Establish a specific account for tracking of reporting fees and spending, Ensure the reporting fees are only used for GI Bill certification or supporting programs, Requires all qualified schools to ensure their SCO’s are trained per the SAA/VA requirements (any school with 20+ GI Bill users and a School Certifying Official (SCO) with a primary role of certification), SVA/VA requirement for training will be set up by 8/1/2018, Failure to comply could impact program approval for GI Bill benefits.

 

U.S. Army Great Lakes Recruiting Battalion Army Careers and Education Symposium (ACES)– 4/6/18

The U.S. Army Recruiting Command (Great Lakes Battalion) will host a 5 hour training event for educators, administrators and community partners on April 6, 2018 from 10am-3pm at Lansing Community College (West Campus). The intent of this training is to educate these partners on the benefits, training, jobs and lifestyle the Army offers. We hope to break down stereotypes and demonstrate how the Army values training and education. We will show that the Army offers training and jobs that translate well to the civilian sector – with competitive pay and outstanding benefits.
